How do you qualify for Safelink Wireless in Washington?

There are two methods to qualify for a free government cell phone. You need only meet the conditions of one of the two tests. You do not need to meet both.

Method #1: Income Test

Method #2: Qualifying Program Test

Are you participating in any of the following public aid programs?

  • Disability Lifeline (Previously General Assistance)
  • DSHS Chore Service
  • Medical Assistance (including Medicare cost sharing program)
  • Refugee Assistance
  • State Family Assistance (SFA)
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program SNAP (Food Stamps)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)

If you are, you should be eligible for a free government cell phone provided by Safelink Wireless. This is true, again, even if you did not meet the income test. The programs included in this list change now and again, so if you do not currently meet either test, make sure you check back, as you may qualify at a future time.

If you met either of the tests above, you most likely qualify for a free government cell phone. There are two more requirements, though. You need to have a valid U.S. street address in order to receive a cell phone through this program. Unfortunately at this point in time, Lifeline Assistance is not available to customers with only a P.O. Box. Are you homeless? The other requirement concerns your household. Only one free government cell phone is allowed per household, which means you can only qualify if nobody else in your household is currently a subscriber to the program (via Safelink or another provider). If someone else already has applied or is receiving Lifeline, you cannot. If nobody else in your household has applied, you should qualify without a problem. Fill it out and attach verification documents that prove you either meet the income test or the qualifying program participation test.
